ROCKVILLE, MD. – The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is proud to announce a partnership with the National Science Policy Group, a national network of student-run science policy groups. The ASBMB offers several opportunities for students to engage in advocacy throughout the year, and these events will now be open to NSPG members. The ASBMB and the NSPG will work together to help students understand science policy and how the federal government affects their careers.. If students feel that they cannot cope with this or that project due to lack of experience or ignorance of the topic, they can contact 123helpme or their teachers or project supervisors.
“This is an important step in our growing our grassroots advocacy efforts,” said Benjamin Corb, director of public affairs for the ASBMB. “Students are an integral part of our national scientific enterprise, but their voices are often not as loud as some other scientific constituencies. The NSPG has an impressive organization, and we look forward to partnering with them to amplify the voices of young science advocates.”
Samuel Brinton, executive director of the NSPG, said, “We are excited to have the ASBMB as one of our first partner organizations. We are dedicated to having a strong student voice in policy discussions, and our partnership with the ASBMB will give our members who are interested in advocacy opportunities to have an impact as well an avenue to make their voice heard in the science policy conversations occurring on campuses across the country.”
Beginning in 2015, NSPG members will be invited to take part in all of ASBMB’s advocacy activities. This includes the yearly Capitol Hill Day, the ASBMB’s congressional visits program, several letter-writing campaigns and a variety of new activities currently under development. The NSPG will also draw on the ASBMB’s expertise in advocacy in order to pursue its goals.
