A MEMBER of the NSPG is a student group or group of community members which would like to participate in the network of opportunities that the NSPG provides. I write to you as the Executive Director of the National Science Policy Group (NSPG). As you may know, NSPG is the nation’s newest and largest network of science policy student groups. It is my pleasure to invite you to join our active network of students passionate about the intersection of science and policy.

NSPG was formed in Spring 2013 following the highly successful work of the Stand With Science (www.standwithscience.org) campaign, which united over 10,000 students and their allies in an advocacy effort to support federal science and engineering research funding under the looming impact of sequestration. NSPG soon emerged from that momentum to unify the voices of science, technology, and engineering students in matters of science policy with engagement both in Washington, DC and on campus.

Beginning with only a few established student science policy groups on college campuses at MIT, CalTech, and the University of Iowa, NSPG has now grown to nearly 30 different chapters across the country. Our monthly conference calls allow us to stay in close communication, and NSPG students provide a critical resource for each other: a shared interest in learning about the intersection of science and policy and even action to share our message for science support with leaders in Washington, DC.

We believe that the National Science Policy Group offers a new opportunity for students passionate about science to engage in the discussion on campus and Capitol Hill. As a result, we are interested in doing everything we can to serve and strenghten the membership of NSPG and worked together to create a toolkit of resources such as “How to Start as Science Policy Group on Your Campus” to “The First Five Meetings of a Science Policy Group” or “Attending a Congressional Visits Day”.

There is no cost to join NSPG. We are simply a network of students – mostly in graduate science and engineering programs – standing up for science on our campuses and in Washington, DC. As a potential NSPG Partner, we recommend that an interested group on your campus join together, connect with our network of 30 campus-based student groups and begin the process of deciding where your collective interests are on the science support spectrum from learning more about science and innovation policy as a discipline to engaging in advocacy for science funding. We hope that the resources we have already created will offer useful tips and tricks to help you engage the students on your campus.
